Metamorphosing help

Hi everyone,
I was just wondering how you are meant to metamorphosise your axolotls? When are they too young to start? Is vitamin B in their food a good way? Will they just do it naturally? Our axies are 6 months old. Please tell me everything you know about metamorphosising and them becoming land creatures. Thanks =)

Are you aware that is extremely uncommon for an axolotl to metamorphose naturally?

Trying to artificially induce metamorphisis by your axolotl (lowering water levels, iodine etc) often just kills it.

To answer your question simply:

You are not 'meant' to metamorphose your axolotls at all.

i'm curious WHY you would want to morph your axie...? why not get a salamander? i am attracted to the unique properties of the axie, and that is why I took one into my care. just curious.

Hi
There are no salamanders or any kind of lizard in new zealand other than skinks and a few very expensive ones from petshops. I think it is illegal to have them. I was interested to know what caring for a lizard was like. I've never owned any other amphibians other than golden bell frogs. I've heard its not at all rare and when i asked around friends, many had successfully metamorphosised them and had them running around the house. I consulted the petshop and they are trying it

What kind of lizard are you after?

Making an axie morph is not safe and quite cruel. I find it hard to believe that any have had success without killing some axies in the process.
Had them running around the house?

I'd also love a salamander but wouldnt think about forcing an axie to morph. There are many alternative lizards you could get.

jenn and lisa, i also live in NZ and have never heard of a case of an axie morphing.

forcing axies to morph is considerd cruel by most as it puts alot of stress on them, some people inject them also which would be even worse! people normally find they die a short while after anyway....

i would ask the zoo or maf if we are allowed any/allowed to own them with permits

Just an FYI, a metamorphed axolotl is not a lizard (a reptile), it is still a amphibian and caring for one will not give you any real insight into lizard care. There are two main groups of lizards in New Zealand, geckos and skinks. If you want to read more on the native lizards please see http://www.mwhglobal.co.nz/About-Us/Lizard-Species.asp

Hey i have 2 axies and were thinking of inducing metamorphosising but i won't any more, i see where you are coming from, imagine if we were made to turn into gorillas or monkeys.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
