What do you enjoy keeping more. Salamanders, or newts. I personally like salamanders better. Please tell what caudate you like the best.

Newts are salamanders.

Specifically, all newts belong to the family Salamandridae.

My favorite species is probably Ambystoma laterale. They've got personality that goes to 11.

Actually Newts are not Salamanders, Axolotls are actually a different species altogether, so their evolved form could not possibly be a salamander.

Axolotls are a species of salamander. Newts are a family of salamanders. All salamanders belong to the class Lissamphibia, order Caudata. Axolotls, eastern newts, hellbenders, palmate newts, all of them are Caudates (salamanders).

Axolotls were actually considered a sub-species of tiger salamander for many years.

Class - Lissamphibia (well, this is actually a sub-class of Amphibia, depending on who you ask)
Order - Caudata/urodela (salamanders, or 'amphibians with tails')
Family - Ambystomatidae (mole salamanders)
Genus - Ambystoma
Species - Ambystoma mexicanum (axolotl)

Newts are in the family Salamandridae, making them still salamanders. Like all squares are rectangles, but not all rectangles are squares. All newts are salamanders, but not all salamanders are newts.

I enjoy both, but I think I like my aquatic tanks more. I can have more happening on all levels and not just the floor of the tank. As for salamanders vs. newts. Doesn't matter. I do prefer animals that are not shy. However if I kept a shy species - I'd do my best to enjoy it via luring it into the open with food at key times. Like feeding my whites tree frogs just before I start doing the dishes. hahaha

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
