I have a leucistic axolotl. Its plump like a female and doesnt seem to have swollen cloaca like a male would, but I was told to give it time since my axolotl is only almost 9 months.

I've just had a 'female' decide she's a boy at 13 months. I almost sold it as a one of a breeding pair last month!

Last night I had a pair breed. Out of the 3 in the tank only one looks like it had matured as I was fairly certain that it was male (wild type), the 2 leucistics didn't look as if they had even matured. Guess I was wrong.
No eggs yet, but the male had certainly done his part last night.
Today has been quite chaotic with preparing 2 extra tanks to split all 3 of them until I know what's happening.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
