Hi,

A few pics of my Hynobius retardatus larvae... found in the pool of their outdoor enclosure.
It's their first breeding, the most part of the "egg bags" wasn't fertile.

They bred again this year.

Unfortunately no pics of larvae...

Here's a pic of the enclosure. It's 150 x 65 cm and 60 cm underground.
The "pool" is very tiny, but it seems it's enough for them...




I put 8 subadults inside in 2012, but in this kind of setup I never see them all in the same time.
So I don't know what is the sex-ratio.
I had two clutches this year, so I've at least two females...
 
It's around 1,5-2 cm diameter ;
I don't know the length, I didn't unroll the clutch to measure it. But I guess it's at least 20 cm (unrolled).

Last year, for their first breeding, clutches was around 1-1,5 cm diameter and 8-10 cm length.

    with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

    Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

    Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
