Just a short trip with two friends to a place where I thought we might find vernal pools. Having never actually gone herping before, I had no real idea what to look for, so for that reason alone, it was useful.
I had never realized frogs could be so deafening.
We found the following four fellows:

A spring peeper--the first find of the night. Found swimming near the edge of the pool. Maybe an inch and a half long on the outside.

A wood frog, also found swimming near the edge of the pool.

Two spotted salamanders found swimming in algae inside the pool. We didn't find any egg masses.
While this was basically a successful trip, it does turn out that the park closes after dark
so I can't really recommend for spring herping. I will continue to search for sites near providence that are open at all hours.
