Hi all!
My name is Mary and I just got a cute little axolotl named Butters.
A little about me, I live in Worcester Massachusetts and I teach Spanish in high school, but I love to learn about animals and take care of them.
A little bit about Butters. He is only 3 or 4 inches and looks so cute and helpless. I need to research how fast axies grow when they are that small. I have him in a planted tank that has been running for several years as a planted tank only. The substrate is sand and I have several sword plants, two javas and a nana. I used a tall fake plant to slow the flow from the filter.
The tank is been at 68-70 degrees Fahrenheit for the past week. I am trying to figure out whether I want to get a fan for the top of the tank or use some other method for cooling.
I will be posting questions soon!

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
