Hi
How old is this axolotl. Do you know if its male or female?

Mel

He is male and about 9 months old

If he's definitely male, I cant quite tell from the pic. Then i think he could possibly be dropping spermatophores. It doesn't look like anything un natural to me.
So dont worry!
(altho this picture reminds me of my gold female when she picked up some spermatophore!!)

Thank you,I shall let you know how things develop

Ok firstly they are not testies that is the axolotls cloaca, Which as shown by the photo is swollen, which means he is a male.
Mefly is probably right about the spermatophores.
So i would say that your axolotl has hit sexual maturity.

BTW, I have to say that it's just rude to take pictures like that and post them on the internet! How embarrassed your axolotl must be!

I'm actually jealous of all of the amazing photos that people post on this site. I don't have the right camera to get this quality.

Also, the photographic record that is available here is a great resource.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
