Okay, so I got 3 baby axolotls 2 are growing like bad weeds....about 2 inches long and 4 little legs...the 3rd is still under an in and only has 1 front leg...

my question is when will they be big enough to go into a 55gal (currently in a 2.5 gal)

Hello !

Young axolotls are very cannibalistic and I undestand from what you say that one of your 3 animals has its legs regularly bitten off by its tankmates.

So, if I were you, I'd move the 2 bigger animals in a bigger tank (preferably with a lot of hiding places) and let the tiny one in its tank until it has re-grown its legs and start growing normally.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
