You can touch them if you need too, but I wouldn't make a habit of it. Be sure your hands are clean/wet. I suppose you could pet it, but I suspect most healthy axies wouldn't really like it and they'd either swim off at the first touch or try to bite the finger as it approaches. As for picking it up, if you mean out of the water. This would be not advisable unless you're transferring to another aquatic place. The main problem is that handling them frequently will damage their slime coat. The slime coat is a protective layer and damaging it is a stress and may open them up to infection.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
