Hey :)

Picked up my 2 axolotls juveniles (i think, there just over 5cm).

First up is my melanoid (black i believe?) names Axle (if a male) or Alyy (if a girl). He/she is missing the tip of the tail and a rear leg but ive been told buy the hatchery that they will grow back over time.

Then there is my golden albino named Loti (if female, havent come up with a male name yet). Loti is also missing all the toes off one foot so I've got my other fingers crossed as well.

I myself am a 20 year old guy from the central coast of NSW Australia and am studying Primary School teaching at university, in my 2nd year at the moment.

Will keep a constant update and a bunch of photos as my days get very boring. Will post a picture of my tank setup tonight some time.

If there is anyone on the central coast comment or send me a message as id love to see someone else's setup to adapt mine.

Daniel.

Re: Hey :)

so heres some pics of the tank, during feeding tonight i failed hard like the noob that i am and distrubed a fair bit of sand. figured out that trying to get the food to settle with tweezers and my use of the force was useless so i jumped on the ebays and ordered myself a turkey baster (impossible to find in shops here).

any recommendations on getting rid of the sandy water?

no luck on the pvc pipe yet, but hopefully they will take to it and use it as a hide or to swin through.

plants are plastic also as my last green thumb died in the garden a few years ago.

axle has called dibs on the hide in the back left and spends most of his time there but came out for some meal worms (blood worms?)

ph is sitting around 6.8 to 7 atm which apparently is good. going to take more water to the pet shop on friday for a full test.

any recommendations on if i should change anything?

Re: Hey :)

Maybe if your title had been more informative you'd have gotten more response. "check out my axie tank" or something. I could change the title.

Re: Hey :)

if you'd like to, just after a spot of advice but im not overly concerned atm, taking another water sample to the pet shop today to have it checked over for amonia and so on.

thanks,

heres an updated photo of the tank, seemed to clear up when i did a 20% water change today, plus i removed the pipe to make a bit more room. may put the two small elbows back in.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
