Hey guys so I did hours of hours of research before I bought Groot my best. Actually this website has been very helpful. A month and a half ago I saved my leucistic Spanish ribbed meet. The pet shop was terrible and told me false info about how to take care of my best. They didn't even have a thermometer in the tank and refused to tell me the temp of his pet store tank. Any way I have been deligent about keeping Groots tank at around 55 to 70 degrees but never above 70. Well I went on vacation and I gave very through instructions to my mother in law. I don't think she kept the tank cool enough and she thought it would be nice for him to have the window light open for Groot. That would have been giving him direct sun light which I've read is bad for the newt. Anyway I saw black spots on the newt and I'm worried that if it gets worse I'll have to amputate. I work at an animal hospital so I bet I can get someone I know to help me do it right. Im hoping it's not this or if it is if there are other alternatives. I tried my best to get a picture.

Get a pic. Black spots on leuc ribbed are part of the normal patterning.

Okay thanks for replying. Here are some pictures just in case. I couldn't figure out how to upload them when I posted.

It sounds normal to me. Ribbed newts are very resilient. They can take temps from 40F to about 80F. I try to keep mine between 55F and 75F. The direct sunlight should be o.k. but might cause algae problems. The biggest mistake babysitters do is overfeeding.

Oh I just realized that my phone auto corrected "newt" to "meet". ??. Okay I think I may have overrated but I was just super worried. I tried posting pictures before but it didn't work. I'll try again.

Probably the start of sexual maturity, males develop black palms and forearms, nuptial pads, for grasping females. Keep an eye on it but its prob ok.

That makes sense. Tell me if this theory of mine is sound- I've been keeping the lights off and window shades down in my room where Groot resides. He may have instinctively thought it was winter, but when Barbara put the shades up while I was gone he could think it's spring. Isn't that a thing breeders do to make their newts mate? Anyway he's the only living creature in my tank. In other words I don't have any female newts. I'm afraid to because I'm not ready to raise newt eggs to maturity. Would it be beneficial in the future to get one for Groot as a buddy? Also what your all saying makes even more sense because he hasn't shown any other symptoms of limb rot. He has been eating like an crocodile and he is more active than usual. He is growing like crazy. Two months ago when I got him he was 3 1/2 inches. He is now 5 1\2. How old should be to achieve sexual maturity? I also notice that his tail has become a lot bigger and more wavy recently. Maybe another sign of sexual maturity? I don't know. Any ways here are more pictures.

The black spots have now spread to the tips of his fingers. Is there an article on this where I can compare the black spots from sexual maturity to limb rot?

Sorry for the poor quality pic, this guy did not appreciate a photo shoot. As you can see the inner forearms and palms are black. Can you get a pic of yours ? At 5" yours is probably mature.
