My california newt was being fed 2-3 times a week, chopped nightcrawlers, and then one day I came to check on him and he was a skeleton. I had him in a 10 g, with fake sphagnum moss, and two cork bark hides. He had a pretty big water dish that he spent almost all of his time in, I fed him in there too. He was about one inch long, I caught him in December 2017, and he did so well all this time. What could have happened?

My best guess is the sudden escalation of heat we've been experiencing did him in. I know my T.sierrae are certainly getting toasty; it's hard to keep California spp. cool enough (72-75F)

Either that or such a small specimen was vulnerable to a captive transition..

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
