My Tarichas (pics)

Hi.

I photographed my Tarichas this week. The skinnier of the two (bottom picture) had a near miraculous recovery from extreme starvation, he's starting to fatten up a bit :happy: and has begun to be bold enough to be handfed.

Wow! nice newts! When I got my two T.Shanjing, I too had a skinny guy that made a miraculous turn around. Good for you. Long live the NEWTS!!

Great animals! Taricha are (one of) my favorite caudata...:)
Skinny Taricha aren´t always easy to get back in shape again!

Gorgeous little guys! Tarichas have to be one of my fave. Good work on your little guys ...or gals ;)

Thanks for the comments. The Tarichas certainly have become my favourites too. :happy:

- Supergrappler - I fed them cut up earthworms and the occasional piece of raw fish. Always placing food at the same place near the hiding spot at lights out, every night and changed to fresh food if it wasn't eaten during the night. I tried hard to disturb them as little as possible, only natural daylight.

I think that was the key in this case: Consistent supply of food + Peace and quiet.

Thank you for the advice. I have 2 large morphs and 1 medium morph and 1 tiny one. They are all the same age but one just seems really small for his/her age. Its active and eats but seems much smaller than the others.

I will implement your advice using natural light only and keep disturbance at a minimum.

I appreciate your help! :animal:

    with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

    Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation
