AMPHIBIAN TECH

Title: Wildlife Field/Laboratory Technician
Agency: Department of Fisheries and Wildlife Sciences,Virginia Tech
Location: South River (near Waynesboro, Virginia) and Blacksburg,
Virginia

Job Description: Looking to fill one field/laboratory technician
position to assist in project investigating the effects of mercury on
amphibian reproduction and development. The position will involve
collecting adult amphibians in the field during their breeding season
and the subsequent husbandry of tadpoles and juveniles at our
Virginia Tech facilities.

This position will begin in February 2009 and continue for 9-12
months with the potential extension pending the availability of
funding. Work hours will sometimes exceed 40 hrs/week and
night/weekend work will be required. Shared housing will be provided
at the field site (ca. March 1st - May 1st) but the applicant is
responsible for providing her or his own living accommodations in
Blacksburg (assistance with housing searches can be provided). The
applicant will coordinate aspects of the study and work closely with
a PhD student and a postdoctoral researcher involved in the project.

Qualifications: Applicants should have a B.S. degree in wildlife,
ecology, biology, or related field. Additional graduate work or post-
graduate experience is not required but is preferred. Applicants must
have a valid driver's license and a good driving record and be
able to work well with others. Applicants must be self-motivated and
comfortable working in field environments under a range of
conditions. The following are preferred knowledge, skills or
abilities: handling and/or rearing amphibians, knowledge of their
biology, ecology, and/or husbandry, prior field research experience,
data-entry in Microsoft Excel.

The application must include a resume, cover letter, and the contact
information( email and telephone) of at least two references.
References who can attest to the applicant's work ethic and abilities
are particularly helpful.

Salary: Commensurate with experience and training

Start Date: 1 February 2009 or mid-February at the latest
