Does anyone keep salamanders or newts in outdoor habitats? I have built a few in the yard for tortoises and other herps, but I have a big open area that's in constant shade. Would love to construct an enclosed habitat for newts or salamanders. My two biggest concerns are providing enough room that they can escape the heat on hot days in Southern California and what materials are best to prevent climbing out.

I was thinking something that was a small pond with a lot of soil, leaves, mosses, bark, etc. and shade plants enclosed to prevent escape but mostly to prevent rats, cats, and birds from entering.
