These axolotls look a little green around the gills.

Yea. They are gfp juveniles. Here's a picture of a young adult. The wild type gfp have green eyes under normal normal light. I rarely look at them under a black light but know some people who do.

This is one of mine that I've raised most of its life in a tank with a good sponge filter system. It seems like the gills grow different in different set ups. They look healthy to me but do curl front. I got her parents from a biology teacher. They are from gene spliced breeding stock that breed true. The genes are spliced for research work.

You should see my basement. This last year I've tried to see how many large aquariums and aquatic ambystomids one can fit in the basement of a medium size house. My guess is one more 55 gallon tank that I'm picking up a stand for this week.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
