I have a hypothesis that I am wondering if the experts that hang out over here can confirm or refute.
I've read in various places that mosaic axolotls are likely to be infertile. what I was wondering is if fertility likelihood is related to the sexual determination mechanism What determines whether an axolotl will grow up to be male or female? and the apparent sex.
My hypothesis is that a male-female mosaic will present as female but be infertile. So male-appearing mosaics would typically be fertile, but female-appearing mosaics would have a 2/3 chance of being infertile.
Thoughts? I'm not a biologist and am extrapolating from tidbits of info picked up over the years that may not apply to ambystoma, so I may be totally wrong.
