Hello, my name is Johnathon and I have been keeping tropical fish for years, but this is my first neotenic salamander. I’m really excited about this pet because of all of the research I have done. They’re definitely an oddball.

She is currently being kept in a 10 gallon tank with a seeded HOB filter (I’ve already purchased a canister filter to upgrade). It is bare bottom and does not currently have a light on it. The temperature is 69 F so I have purchased a fan that should be in tomorrow to get that down a little more. I will upgrade to a 20 gallon once she grows some because I just can’t see having a 12in salamander in a 10 gallon. If there’s anything I need to adjust let me know!

The main thing I need help with is choosing a name. I’m known for putting a good deal of thought into my names and for being indecisive. Please comment with your choice from the following:
Amethyst
Fuchsia
Pearl
Primrose

Thanks!

Thanks! I’ve narrowed it down to those two and I think I’m leaning towards Pearl right now.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
