Is it normal for a tiger this small to morph?

Hello. I caught a couple of salamander larvae and after two weeks this one morphed into an adult. Is this normal? Have I misidentified this specimen? I am from Iowa, and assumed it to be a tiger salamander. After researching some sites online I believe I have identified it correctly. Could an ammonia spike cause the larvae to morph prematurely?

(I posted this on the help forum as well because I wasn't sure where to post it.)

I don't think that is a tiger salamander. I think with a little detective work you could figure out what it is. Do a search on Iowa salamanders and see what popds up.

My quick guess is Ambystoma laterale.

Based on my location within the state (southern edge), my other guess is Ambystoma texanum (smallmouth salamander). How long can I expect to wait before some markings develop that will help in identification?

Thanks!

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
