I ave a new axolotl, my first one. for the first day it was kept on a large bowl.

i filled the tank up the other day, thursday night, it is very cloudy.
there were a few debris of food i hadnt taken out but i havev ow. the water has also been tretaed with water conditioner.

i am very worried about him, he seems to be coming up to the top of tank quite frequently to take gulps of air. is this normal? i am feeding him frozen blood worms.

please help, i am very worried!

If you overfeed bloodworms it can make the water cloudy. I would suggest doing a water change. What are your ammonia, nitrite and nitrate readings? Mel

Hi Lynette, and welcome to the forum.

Could you tell us a little more about your tank, like what else you have in there? Have you got a filter running? Also how big is your new axolotl.
Ideally your tank should have been set up and cycled before you added your axolotl. A newly set up tank can appear cloudy for a few reasons. This article will explain :- Caudata Culture Articles - Cycling

Is you tank even cycled yet?

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
