Hi Guys

I am currently cycling my tank with the use of bloodworms, I have put a couple of frozen bloodworm cubes into the tank to allow it to cycle.

I am getting readings of Ammonia and Nitrite, but there seem's to be nothing going on now e.g. now fluctuation in readings.

So my questions are, is this normal? And is there anything I can do to speed up the process?

Thanks

How long has your tank been running? The first thing you get is ammonia, the nitrite, and nitrate last. And what's you pH and readings?

If you have the first two but not nitrate then your cylce isn't fully working yet. It can take a while - sometimes weeks. You have to wait for the bateria to get established, but you can speed the process up by adding the 'good' bacteria - in the form of liquid or pearls from your LFS.

You can also help the cycle along by introducing something from a cycled tank. A plant, ornament, gravel or even better a filter sponge, will all speed the process along. Just find a friend who keeps a fish tank and ask for one these things, you can even return it once you have your own bacteria going :)

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
