Hi, I'm new to both the forum and keeping amphibians.
I just got my first axolotl, Darwin, from someone who kept her for about 3 years and had a pretty good tank setup.
Darwin and her sibling apparently suffered from a disease which killed the sibling and left Darwin's gills stunted. I'd appreciate advice on encouraging gill growth, and any tips that a beginner axolotl keeper should know!
Thanks,
Cosmic

Welcome to the forum! I know gills are a frequent topic of discussion, so if you do a search on "gills" or "large gills" you will find lots of information.

Thanks! I'll search for that :)

As long as Darwin is kept in good conditions (perfect water quality, temperature etc) his gills should do a bit of growing :> But they may not be as long as they once were or as long as some axies.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
