Field Technician Needed for Summer Herp Research!!!
Ron Sutherland, a PhD student in the Nicholas School of the Environment at Duke University, will be continuing his investigations into the response patterns of different vertebrate groups to gradients of urbanization and habitat loss in the Sandhills region of North Carolina. He would like to hire a field technician for an 8-week period (May-June) to assist with driving one or more road-cruising transects in the Sandhills, searching for snakes, amphibians, nocturnal birds, and mammals. There will be substantial opportunities for independent study as a part of this project, if desired for research/thesis credit. Last year's field work yielded over 2000 observations of vertebrate animals, including 26 species of snakes!
Compensation:
The technician will be paid $10/hour, 40 hours/week, plus free housing will be provided in the Sandhills Sunday night through Friday morning during the study. Also, mileage will be reimbursed at the rate of $0.20/mile, which should cover gas and basic wear and tear on your vehicle while driving the road transects.
Requirements: Applicants should…
1. Have their own reliable vehicle, and be willing to drive it each night during the study.
2. Have good night vision, and be able to see small animals crossing the road ahead of them in their headlights while driving.
3. Be comfortable working on their own at night in rural areas with minimal supervision
4. Have a safe driving record, and be willing to drive slowly and safely during the study.
To Apply:
Please send a resume and a brief cover letter summarizing your relevant experience and your availability in May, June, and early July to Ron Sutherland, rws10@duke.edu. Closing date March 5th, 2007. Any questions about the job? Please email Ron or call 919-768-6174
Please forward this announcement to anyone who might be interested!!
(Don't need a job, but do want to help road-cruise some this spring/summer? Please contact Ron and he will send you all of the information to get you started. Reimbursement for gas money may be available!)
