My t karelinii male is laying flat in a rock crevice with his limbs above his head. The best way to describe this position that I can think of is to say it's like he's doing a belly flop. his eyes are closed. I first thought he was dead but he occasionally moves. Has anyone ever seen this? it is very troubling to me. I can't think of what could be wrong except that it has to do with the worms I've fed him recently. But I fed everything else the same worms. No other newts are showing this behavior.

Ok, upon further observation he appears to be shedding now and otherwise fine. That position must have been the first step of shedding or something. or unrelated. still let me know anyone if you've ever seen this before.

Yes that´s shedding behaviour, very normal. It´s used to loosen the skin in the head.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
