My partner has decided to set up his new Cichlid tank next to my soon-to-be axolotl tank -They're only about 10cm apart. Will it worry the axolotl to have big scary fish staring in at his tank, or will he not care/notice?

Thanks =)

How considerate of you! When I first saw the thread title, I thought it would be another question about suitable tankmates.

Axolotls do not see very well, so they may not even notice. If you are concerned, though, you could put plants or other decorations along that side of the axolotl tank as a sort of sight shield. Axolotls need plenty of hiding spaces anyway, and they are quick to go to these when they feel shy or threatened for some chill-out time.

Hope your partner knows that nobody will even notice the Chiclids next to the much more beautiful and interesting axolotls! :D

Lol thanks. I know they don't see that well, but it's been said that they respond when things/people around the tank are moving. I just thought if i were a little axolotl and there were giant goggly fish eyes staring at me hungrily all day I'd get freaked out!

For some reason my partner is all excited about getting his fish... I told him that they'd be boring compared to my axolotl but he doesn't seem to believe me. He thinks its a waste having just one thing in so much space! pft

Hi Neke
I have my fish tank about 1 foot from my axie tank and have never noticed either the axies or fish being concerned about the other .

I would suggest putting a mirror on the side pane of the cichlid tank. This way you can minimise heat transfer to your Axolotl tank and remove the issue of line of sight altogether. More importantly, your cichlids can display to themselves all day - a great way of diffusing aggression and allowing the more subordinate fishes a break from getting grief from the dominant males all day - they're far too busy seeing off their rival who never backs down!

Thanks, I"ll try that :happy: The axolotl doesn't seem to care what the fishies are doing, but I have caught them staring at her a few times. I think they're just waiting to get bigger so they can imagine eating her better. But then again they stare at me too... I suspect they are secretly evil. I'd like to put something there to stop the aquarium light from going into her tank, so I'll give a mirror a go.

    with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

    Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

    Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
