Question: Cycling - toxic level of nitrites?

Hello everyone

So I'm in the process of cycling my first tank (as some of you might remember).
This week I've finally been getting nitrites, and I'm still getting ammonia.
I was wondering: at what level should the nitrites be at in order to be considered safe for my axolotl?
When I was dealing with ammonia I tried to keep the level below 0.5 ppm (but it sometimes went a little over, but never over 1 ppm).
What parameters am I looking at with nitrites?

Thanks for your help!

Once finished cycling your nitrItes should be zero the same as ammonia, it will take a while and when you're nearing the end of your cycle you will start seeing nitrAtes. Anywhere under 40 ppm is considered safe for nitrAtes. NitrItes however do need to be controlled like ammonia, keep up the water changes and you should be fine. Good luck :D

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
