Hi everyone, I was wondering if anyone has ever been able to correctly sex there fire sals when they are still young. I know that the normal age is roughly 3 to 4 but I have two little ones (s.s. Salamandra) that were born the end of May 2012 and I am pretty sure one is showing a definite cloacal bulge and the other is not. I am not exactly sure on their length, I'm guessing 13 cm plus (nose to tail).

I am just curious to see if anyone else has seen early signs or if my ones cannot actually be sexed at this age.

P.S. They are both suspected siblings from a huge litter, so should I stop any breeding that may go on in the future or is it ok for them to inbreed? I must say I don't like the thought of them inbreeding but my tropical fish do it all the time haha

Thanks in advance :)

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
