Hi

I am getting frogbit, and I've seen mixed reviews about having lighting in an Axie tank. But doesn't the Frogbit provide shade for them? With that said, do any of you have any recommendations for lighting that would be appropriate for both Axie and frogbit?

Sincerely,

Bradleyht

I don't know about specific lights but choose a low watt light, and watch for ones which emit a lot of heat which can affect your tank temp. Make sure your tank has 2 hides for each axie so they can get away from the light when they want to.
The plant should also offer shade, as long as you have enough of it :)

What is your budget?

Frogbit is super easy to grow, you can get like cheap t5 ot t8 LED tube over it or just plain led light bulb/stripe, you can even use like 13-20W CFL light and that will grow it without problem. Other cheap aquarium specific leds like nicrew led or beamswork led are also pretty cheap compared for the output but yeah any of those options would grow frogbit :), just make sure you provide a shaded area in the tank until frogbit takes over the top

I got one that is comparable to the two that you mentioned. Called Aquaneat. I read reviews, and the questioned answered on Amazon. I've decided to hang it above the tank, to give a little more space between the light and the surface of the water.

Thank you so much for your help!

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
