Akira is a 3" lucy I quickly and happily received from Smokey Mountains Precious Axolotls on November 7. It enjoys munching on bloodworms and pieces of red wrigglers, and spends its time crawling on the sand, sitting on the plants or climbing the wood. My parents love it and think it's very cute when it swims freestyle through the water. When Akira becomes an adult and no longer a juvenile, I'll move it to a 20 gallon tank. It is currently alone and I plan on just keeping one axolotl.

In this pic, you can see Akira's forked/trident gill on its left.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
