I noticed that little raised bumps forming on my axies head. I haven't seen them on the rest of her body yet, and I'm not sure what it is? She's acting normally and still eats the same amount with the same enthusiasm. She still follows me around the room. The water parameters are normal-the nitrate was a little off a week ago but was fixed after some water changes.
I have the stuff to give her a tea bath if that's needed but I don't know if it's something I'll have to have somebody come and look at- no matter how hard I try it's really hard to get pictures of.
I would fridge her but I don't trust my fridge- it often freezes everything and we don't know why or what causes it to happen.

She's always had short gills and I've been told it's just her genetics

Do you have any more pictures of the axie? From the ones you posted that doesnt seems fine at all , looks like its covered in white coat all over?

I won't be able to get a picture until later today, think it's just the odd lighting in the room. She doesn't have a white coat all over but its Kind of white above the bumps. She is wildtype and not a Melanoid if that's what confused You? She's not black.
I might have someone to look at her but all the help I can get would be great <3

Yep try to get more natural light pictures if possible :)

It's really difficult to get a good picture, I've been trying. Some of the bumps have gone away but she's also gotten more on her body, her biggest being the one on the top of her head. I have a vet that I contacted who wants to take a look at her this week. I cleaned out all the plants and decorations in the tank and did a water change maybe 30/35%. I don't know if I should go bigger than that because I don't want to disrupt the cycle any more than I have to.

Could water hardness have anything to do with it? I know the water here is a bit hard but I'm not really sure how to change that or how it would effect an axi.

She's still acting normally, following me around and eating when fed. I'm just not having luck finding anything that looks like what she has. She doesn't have a white slime coat like you mentioned, she's just a lighter wild type. No curved tail or any signs of stress. Just the mysterious bumps. I'm really worried it's going to turn to something worse </3

Felt like updating the situation- I took my axi to the vet. not fungus or red leg (yet) but he thinks it's probably something bacterial. At this point he didn't want to swab her or test her and stress her out too much unless it was absolutely necessary. Because she's still behaving normally and her only symptom is the bumps. We talked about giving her a shot there and then but desired against it and chose to wait and see how things turn out.
I'm supposed to give salt baths every other day for two weeks and if there is no improvements the vet wants me to come back and he wants to give her a shot/some meds and whatnot.
my water parameters were normal(my water is hard but the vet said they prefer hard water to soft water and shouldn't be anything to worry about) and she was behaving normally, but she had the bumps all over. He said it's definetly not red leg but its possible it could develop into it if left untreated.
So far she hasn't gotten worse, she's stayed about the same, but its only day two after the vet visit. Hoping she will get better soon </3

Bonus: The vet assistance and non-amphibian vets were going nuts when I brought her in, they had never seen an axi before and were super excited about her, she was like a celebrity for a few muinets. They had no clue what I was talking about when I had called the vet originally to book an appointment, but they were super excited after looking up what they were.

It looks like you have a great vet team looking after her. Thanks for updating us with this. Please do keep us posted.

So the vet did as much as he could. he really had no clue what was wrong with her. she hasen't gotten worse but she hasen't gotten better(ive been giving her salt baths and such). she still eats like a little pig, but im still worried about her. the vet said i could take her to a specialist a state over, but the closest one is pushing a three hour drive. Im a college student nearing the end of the semester, and even if I could afford a specialist, I wont even be able to go in at least a months time. so at this point im out of options. I guess im just going to have to wait and see how things turn out.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
