I thought I'd share some pics and information on my Mole Salamanders, hoping that other keepers will share as well. These 2 here have been eating crickets, wax worms, and earthworms. I almost never see them and they stay under their hides most the time. I obtained these 2 from a pet shop earlier this year. My guess is that these 2 are about 2 years of age.

I'm not sure how big A. talpoideum get but I do know they're a smaller species of Mole Salamander. Does any other keeper or well informed person know their estimated maximum size in length? It'll be great to see how other A. talpoideum keepers keep their salamanders!

At 3 inches in length, those are this years morphs. They don't look stocky enough to be any older than this years. Even though they only reach a max length of around 11cm (4.3 in) they will get really heavier as they reach maturity.

Mine are kept on a substrate of a 50/50 mix of coco-fiber and forest soil. They are fed 3 times a week on a diet that consists of crickets, worms, grubs, waxworms, pinkies (1 every 6 weeks), and isopods.

Did you know there are even some populations that are neotenic!

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
