Veins growing outside of Bowie's gills?

I first noticed this a year ago, when a single filament looked much thicker and redder than the others. Over that time, more and more have emerged and I'm starting to think these are actual veins!

If you look at these pictures, you'll see what I'm talking about. In the last image (the backlit one) you can see the main branches of the veins in her gill stalks and how they lead directly to the funny red filaments. And if you look carefully in the second image, you can see that these filaments form a loop and go back inside the stalk. It was hard to get a good picture of the looping.

What do you guys think? Have any of you seen this before?

Seen this a few times on here.

They are harmless. There are capillary beds in the gill fimbriae. Sometimes, overt regeneration results in a thickened fimbriae loop being formed.

In some instances, blood pooling/congestion in a gill can also cause a distention to the vessel. There are no 'valves' in the gill vessels so its not the same as 'varicose veins' but the concept of increased pressure/congestion in a vessel causing distention is similar.

My albino has some of these, my research said it was perfectly normal. As Beks says, it's common concern, and pops up quite regularly.

It doesn't appear to bother them, so it shouldn't bother us!

Hmmm, well I guess it's good to hear that others have experienced this. The pictures I posted are from a few months ago. I was just looking at Bowie now, and she has even more sticking out (maybe 5-6 new ones) and the old ones have gotten much thicker. Is this still ok?
