Here are my newly aquired Notophthalmus viridescens louisianensis. One of the females was gravid and laid about 20 fertile eggs. Here are some pics there are more in my album:

nice newts! mine quit being aquatic and went back to land, it was short lived...I had to make a new tank for them

Wow, beautiful newts. For a while now I've been wanting to raise efts to aquatic adults. One question though, how do you know when an eft is ready to be aquatic?

Other than them spending more time in the water portion the only other indication they are ready that I have noticed is when they reach adult size they will gradually change from the bright orange to a dull green. At least thats the case with N. v. viridescens.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
