Looking for some suggestions or thoughts. I have been reading all the care sheets and researching on web T. shanjing diet.
I feed mine earthworms, woodlice, crickets, white worm and live blood worm. Mine have refused the frozen bloodworm.
I have read of feeding them chicken or fish but it doesn't say frozen or fresh or cooked or what type fish? Any ideas?
I know that some keepers have observed there shanjings going off food, is this cause they need more variety?
Are slugs a good idea?
Crickets seems to never fail to get them to eat.
Also I try to feed mine in the morning but sometimes in the evening is there any preference?
I do try to use tweezers to feed as well ensure a successful thoughts.
Hope someone finds this interesting.

Terrestrial salamanders hunt mainly by sight, so non-living food doesn't work well. If you use non-living, it probably has to be moved horizontally on forceps, as salamanders aren't good at perceiving vertical movement as prey. Slugs are a possibility, as are small snails, but some kinds of slugs will be accepted by one species and rejected by another because of scent, taste, or gooiness. In water, wild tylos tend to eat shrimp and snails, among other things. Beetles of various kinds are commonly prey for amphibians in general. If it's not toxic, which typically means brightly colored, it's potential prey. Individual animals may get blase about certain foods or otherwise show differing preferences from others of their species.

I was going to ask if anyone had tried weavils as a livefood for them and even roaches but i personally wont be keeping roaches, they are disgusting.

All my young newts love greenfly (aphids) if you grow some lupins in your garden or in large pots, when they flower they get infested with aphids, cut off the flower and shake into tub.
Just be sure never to use any chemicals on your plants, it has worked well for me for years, dont collect from plants that you dont care for yourself in case of chemicals.
The same with slugs, you have to be careful that they have not being eating slug pellets.

Plus you dont get rid of them. I had some, realized they were to big, let them starve for a month, then put them in the freezing basement for a month, when I got them back up to throw them away, some of them were still moving. Well, back to the basement. Feeling kind of sorry for them tbh

Thanks for replies, so best results is home grown food, a variety and lots of it.

Has anyone created a method for feeding through life stages? I work off the method if its smaller then the individuals head. Is it important to provide different nutrient at different stages?

I feed them with little pieces of chicken, i move with tweezers in front of them....but basical diet is heartworm....

Has anyone noticed a size preference with this species during feeding?

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
