I have a 4 year old salamandra.s.terrestris I have plans to obtain an female (breeding pair) for an new outdoor enclosure however would temps in the winter(with hibernaculm) around 0 to -3c be ok? Btw it rarely drops under 5c but it dose drop under 0 some nights.thanks harry
 
Give them a hibernacula ( underground retreat ) or provide a large surface area ( like large rock or log ) they can burrow under and they should be fine. They are a very cold tolerant species. -Seth
 
Both mine (in separate tanks) were outside for half of the winter I just moved them indoors as one of them had an injury prior and might be weaker (underestimated them). They just burrowed under the stone and wood pieces.

    with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

    Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

    Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
