Hi. I came home and found my newt bloating his mouth. I poked him and he wouldn't move... he seemed just fine when I left home today. I still have 3 more alive in my tank. Please advice me if it's some kind of disease or impaction or whatever.

I welcome. Something more close.. namely. How long do you have them? What recently served food? Which pace. in the container? As the matter of the filtration and the quality of water of the container? That is: the reaction, the No2 content and No3. When done swaps of water or some changes were, adding something to the container. Didn't he swallow base with food?

Hi, thanks for the reply. I've had them for about a month and half. I give them live tubifex. They are in the jar inside of tank 24/7. I have an external filter with 3.5 liter capacity. Also have small tetra sponge filter with air. The tank is about 45X20X25cm. I change a quarter of water every week. The substrates are coral sands. He probably swallowed some of them when he ate worms. Would it be the reason?

Yes. It is Possible. I think that coral gravel still the small feed like tubifex are a bad connection. Tubifex right away after some time is getting into gravel and when the newt is pulling it in perhaps to do with base, which old person usually to spit out. This swollen part of the throat is puzzling. Whether something gathered and bunged him up, or liquids collected? well how you could cut it with the scalpel and check whether he had some foreign body. Whether there was already a biological balance before letting in the container. Very important in case of Neurergus - which of May temperature!!! Better change this gravel into safe sand or big flat stones. Give them living Daphnia, Seamonkey, tiny earthworm, Chironomidae larva, excluding the filter in addition for this moment.

Ok. I'm guessing it's some kind of infectious disease. One of the other is about to die. He doesn't have any swollen or any, but he barely moves even I took him out of the tank. It's not the temperature because I have a cooler which keeps it 18c degree. It's all happening after I got another newt from a different store. Did he carry some kind of diseases maybe?

With the new specimen in the container it is a frequent case. He moved some pathogen most probably. Just your newts reacted to this pathogen. There is a problem now because it isn't known what it exactly is and curing amphibians is problem, and the majority of drugs can be for them fatal. Here he had to in order to give one's opinion some specialist in curing amphibians. They will survive only strongest specimens. For me at one time the entire farm of other species of newts went bankrupt after entering some vileness into the container. From entire breeding she for me only survived one and I have up till today. There are a few vilenesses which he is eating quickly in case of Neurergus is finishing...
