Hi guys,

I have only had my Axie for 4 days and she's my 1st.

Ok so the pet store didn't give me much to go on and she was in a gravel tank with another Axie so i presumed gravel was ok until i did my research and found it not to be good so i have removed all gravel and put in big pebbles (to keep my live plants in place),* ive also put a lamp next to plants to keep them alive and also this is less light for (Pickles). Now for 2 day's she was swimming around alot which i now think might of been the water, but im confused as the PH is 7.0 and temp is a constant 20°c, is this not right?

Ive just done a full water change so im now waiting to see if her behaviour changes,* fingers crossed.

Now another thing, the pet* store told me they feed her beef heart and shrimp frozen cubes, i tried her and she didn't want to know so i gave her an earth worm and she loved it, but that's it she hasn't eaten now in 2 days?!?

Please give me any information about what i may be doing wrong as i love this little axie and want her to be happy.

Regards
Linzi

How big is her tank? It looks so small. Are you planning to upgrade eventually? Also I only saw you post the ph. What are you other levels like? And what is your actual concern? That’s she’s swimming around more than usual? Or that she hasn’t eaten in 2 days? How old is she?

Did you cycle your tank before putting Pickles into it?

You may have to get rid of the light and just go with artificial plants or else create a cave or tunnel for Pickles to get away from the light. Most axolotls swim around erratically when there is any bright light.
A quick and easy hides are plumbing tubes or connectors (it's the white plastic not the black kind) available at hardware stores.

earthworms are the best food for them, beef heart and other human prey animals might keep them alive but they really should be fed things they could catch in the wild (freshwater shrimp, small snails, small fish, insects),
if yours is an adult they only eat every 2-3 days, as juveniles they should be eating daily but stress from a move could make them lose appetite until they adjust.
I also agree that you need to know your other water parameters, pH alone tells very little about what is happening in the tank.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
