My axy has metamorphosed, how can I...

Re: My axy has metermorphosed, how can I...

I think my axie is going to morph. (If she does it's because she wants to, the conditions she lives in have always been fine and her tank mate isn't showing any signs of morphing) Do you have any suggestions about how I can make it easier for her and how do I set up a new tank for her??

Re: My axy has metermorphosed, how can I...

Are you really sure she's morphing? Do you have pictures of your axie?
It also might be possible that you've bought a tiger salamander instead of an axie. That does happen pretty often.

Re: My axy has metermorphosed, how can I...

Tiger salamanders are illegal in New Zealand so I doubt it's that. A photo would definately help if that's possible?

Re: My axy has metermorphosed, how can I...

I'm not TOTALLY sure (I'm definitely no axie expert!) But it really does look like it from what I've read. Are there any sure fire ways to tell??

also, can the pictures be reposted? The links have broken

The thread is 4 years old. The original poster has deleted them from their photobucket account.

This thread was remade and made into a sticky at the top of this board, the pics are there http://www.caudata.org/forum/f46-be...ssion-free-all/51411-metamorphed-axolotl.html

I have to echo the others here that pictures are very much needed. A progression of any changes that are making it look like it's morphing would help a great deal.

Re: My axy has metermorphosed, how can I...

Umm, I've been watching her for the past few weeks and she has now got nostrils... When do I take her out of the water? Will she drown if I leave it too late?? :/

Re: My axy has metermorphosed, how can I...

Aquatic axolotls also have nostrils.

If your axolotl still has gills, it won't drown.

Re: My axy has metermorphosed, how can I...

but they're like, different... more pronounced maybe??

It's easier for us to help you if you have a picture of your axie.
About the nostrills. My wildtype has pretty big (and 'ugly') nostrills compared to my leucistics.

Axolotls will morph because of poor water conditions, hormome injections, and sometimes because their DNA is programed too. A life span over 5 years is rare after they morph. There is or was one over five years in the zoo in Mexico City but its a record for lifespan after morphing. 2-3 years is good for a morph. Morphing is very stressful on them and cuts their lifespan by almost 10 years.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
