I'm not seeing anything on the gills that looks like it could be fungus. Fungus is often fuzzy looking. Is there a better picture, or can you describe what you're worried about in the photos?

Fungus is fluffy and usually grows between or on the red fluffy parts of the gills, this axy just looks like it has very shiny gill tips, like whats on it's fingers. If the fungus is just so small we can't see it in the picture, it's sure to go away on its own. Just keep the tank clean and it'll be fine. Maybe share a close up picture of the gills since it's hard to tell from these images alone.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
