And am interested in keeping some newts and try to breed some. I am almost a life long aquarist and pretty decent with houseplants as well. I've also worked in a small petshop for like 13 years and have bred and raised fire bellied newts and also fire bellied toads. But that was such a long time ago! I guess I have that bug and since I have my own house now I can really get into it as a serious hobby. But being here there is little in selection as far as local transactions and shipping is seriously expensive. Plus I don't really know a reliable place to get newts online. I want to get into the eastern newts, great crested newts eventually if I can get some somehow. Well I guess if you want to know more about me just ask and I'm glad I came across this forum.

Fire-belly newts used to be everywhere, but now that they're not imported, they might die out. If you can get some of those, since you had success breeding them, you could do good work for the hobby.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
