I am proud new owner of two axolotl which I named Max and Suzie.
Although I think they are still too young to tell the sex...;)
Here are a few pictures of the cuties.
Yes, I know, both miss ALL their legs, and they are already 10cm long.
They have spend their former live in a uni lab in a plastic container
with their other cannibalistic siblings and without any hidey holes...
The full story can be seen in the axolotl newbee introduction section.

But now, here they are, my babies and their new home!
:D

my cockatiel is VERY suspicious :uhoh: towards the new room mates and still panices when the axolotl swim past. I think they remind him of the crocodiles eating his Australian ancestors...:D

Lovely! I hope your cockatiel doesn't get too stressed out and gets used to them soon! Kerry.

Very cute! Poor things missing their little leggies! Hopefully they grow back soon, thank god you rescued them! They are very beautiful and I'm sure they will grow up to be even better. congrats

Thanks!
I am very happy to have the two of them!:D

What beautiful young axies and a gorgeous cockatiel. You can assure your cockatiel that the crocodiles in Australia have mellowed...honestly. :D

Now if Max turns out to be a girl, the name can changed to Maxine I guess. But Ellen, what are you going to do if Suzie is actually a boy?! ;)

Cheers Jacq.

Suzie is short for Suzan/Susan...why not Sus-him or Suz-he =P,
Excellent axies they look in very good condition.

Hi Jaqc, well, I told my cockatiel already not to worry, but he still
avoids going near the tank and when I give him a treat near it,
he still is VERY alert. In case the crocs come out...:D
I like the idea with Maxine.
And, hey,naymo, Suz-HE is also quite funny...:D
Well, it will still take a bit until I can tell the sexes.
They mature around the age of one year, dont they?

Hi Ellen,

Axies reach maturity at about 6 months of age, but yes, it is best to wait a year before trying to sex them as some males are slow at developing and can look 'female'. I'm not going to admit this happened to me as it is far too embarrasing...OOPS!

I like Naymo's suggestion for Susan / Suz-he too.

Sometimes you can be lucky in identifying the gender though as a male may have a highly developed bulge at 6 months indicating that he is 'obviously' a male - it's the females you have to be wary of as they lay the eggs! ;)

Thanks again, Havelock!
:D
Okay, I fear I will find out about the sexes when I have some
surprising eggs in the tank...
:D
I see, sexing a bird is easier, you just take a feather for DNA test...
:D
Can there be any problem with the female laying eggs?
Getting any trouble like birds and reptiles get?

Okay, I cant wait to see any of them "to bulge"
to see how good my name choice was...
:D

Another picture...
Max is posing quite nicely.
I call it "axolotl on the rocks"

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
