Help: two new axolotls one of them is swollen in abdomen

Hi all,

I’ve recently adopted 2 Axolotls.

They are in the tank I bought them in, however, they came with pebbles, which I promptly removed them as I know they aren’t safe for Axies.

One of them has a very swollen abdomen and is struggling to move around. Not floating but staying at the bottom of the tank. I’m very concerned.

Pictures below.

A guy at the local aquarium place said it could be either:

1. Pebbles
2. It’s nearly breading season and could be a female with eggs.

How can I tell? If it is option 1 what do I do?

Please help!

Thanks for your reply, those threads were definitely helpful and reassuring for me.

An UPDATE on Frankie today, is that he/she (unsure of gender) is looking much better.

I went out for dinner last night and there were 3 gravel stones on the tank floor when I got home. I removed them immediately.

This morning when I woke up there were another 6 stones on the floor.

So I feel better in knowing the stones are being passed.

I also fed them this morning (earth worms) and Frankie is still eating which I think is a good sign.

Poor Frankie, definately impaction!
If hx stops eating and passing the stones, you may need to fridge hx. But for now, just keep an eye out for any more stones and monitor their health :)
Fridging is stressful for them, it slows their metabolism and forces their body to expel any food that’s in their system, so this method is only ever used in a life or death situation, or severe impaction.

    Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

    Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
