Hi There,

We have 2 axie's and they have had a few problems. First, edgar got a cottony white infection that was treated with 'Multi Purpose Remedy' which uses malachite green, methylene blue, and acriflavine by moving both to a smaller tank and treating. This worked and then eleanor has formed lots of lumps all over her body and head, but is still eating and swimming around and doesn't seem to be upset. There is also small slug type things that are sticking to the walls that we treated with a half-dose of 'Para-cide' that uses trichlorfon but this didn't work.

We don't think it is hook worms as they didn't react to treatment.

We have no idea what to do now. Please Help!}}

The cottony white infection would have been a fungal infection. This can usually be treated with twice daily saltbaths. Is that multipurpose remedy a fish medicine? Most fish medicines are toxic to axies especially things containing malachite green. There is a list of safe and unsafe medicines on this axolotl site. See: http://www.axolotl.org/health.htm#list

Para cide might not have helped either. The following article shows some tank critters that appear in tanks and how to deal with them. www.caudata.org/cc/articles/Tank_critters.shtml

Where are u currently keeping your axie?

We put the axies in another tank and cleaned out theirs, waited for a day for everything to settle and have just placed them back in. No critters so far, but edgar's skin is still bumpy. There is lots of small bumps with no discolouration. He is black and the bumps are black. He doesn't look stressed and is still eating.

Any ideas?

ps. we just looked at the site you suggested and they were planaria we think.

We have looked everywhere on the net and asked 3 axolotl keepers and they have no idea.

Do you have freshwater test kits? As you have completely cleaned out their tank and placed them back in your tank will now be cycling again . See this article on cycling: http://www.caudata.org/cc/articles/cyclingEDK.shtml
. Cycling takes anywhere from 4-8 weeks (*with or without animals/fish in it).

Cos your tank is cycling you will need to test every couple of days for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate. If the levels are too high change 20-30% of the tankwater. Under no circumstances use so called "instant bacteria boosters" , ph up or down or ammolock as this can muck your cycling up. Cycling is to establish the good bacteria which aids in cleaning your tank.

If you do not have the test kits then take a sample of your water to your petshop and ask them to test for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate and give you the no.s If ur unsure post under a new thread and someone will help.

How often do usually feed your axies? And do you clean up any uneaten waste, hidden waste (under gravel/within sand or decos and plants), poos regularly. (Turkey basters can help thru spot cleaning daily or every 2 days) My friend occasionally gets planaria. She was told it was caused by overfeeding and irregular tank cleaning (ie waterchanges - she does them fortnightly usually).

IMO The bumps may very well have been caused by the dose of medicine you gave. Axies slimecoat is far more sensitive than fish who have scales which is why they also shouldn't be handled so much.

Thanks for the advice.

We handfeed our axies every night so there is no food waste whatsoever, we pick out poos whenever we see them, and we clean the tank once every 7-10 days which is why i was surprised it was planaria.

We will so the cycling and testing and see how they go. Thankyou

How big/old are your axies? If they are over 15cm they shud be fed every 2nd day. Also some poos disintegrate or waste gets caught beneath plants in substrate, under decos. We stir our sand up twice a week with turkey baster and siphon to check no regurg food or waste is buried, which occasionally happens. Our tanks are cycled but we also test ammonia/nitrites or nitrates weekly b4 a waterchange. Do you have gravel or sand?

We have sand and use a net to pick up any poos we see etc. And during cleaning we mix up the sand to collect any other debris.

The pet shop couldn't tell us how old they were but they are 13 - 15cm
