Question: Should my axolotl act like this?

Hi,

My axolotl miniziller in about 4 inches in length and about 4 cm wide.

He/she seems to have favoured one corner of the tank to the rest.

He/she keeps jamming themself behind the heater and occasianly mabye a few times a day comes out and looks at me then goes back to the heater but my water temp is 21.7c at the moment(heater isnt connected its just for in winter if gets to cold)

I am wondering if this is normal behavior for a new axolotl or not?

I got miniziller 2 days ago and he/she stays in an area of the tank about 15cm in all directions when there is another 2ft of tank to explore.

Is this normal then? Hope someone will answer im worried.

Do you have many hides in the tank? I think it is just using the heater to hide behind.

miniziller doesnt look so good anymore

Also i have noticed miniziller has a strangely coloured belly i will put a pic please help ::mad

Miniziller has also not moved his/her gills for an hour neally im very worried now

yes i have hides

I also moved the heater away but miniziller remained motionless and sank a bit

I just touched miniziller and he/she zipped away but even when i blew the water a bit so that miniziller got some liftoff and floated he/she remained motionless please what is wrong

You have only had your axie for a couple of days, I would give him (and you) time to settle in. I know what it's like when you have a new pet, you panic at every little thing, but don't worry, I'm sure you'll both relax in each others company soon.

I would leave Minizilla alone and let him acclimatise to his new surroundings. Please don't poke him or anything it will just stress him out more.

After a few more days you will be more used to him and his character. Good luck and try not to panic, it doesn't sound like there is anything wrong with inizilla.

Hi kerry,

Yeah i think im just getting to worried about things.

I read the whole of axolotls.org a few nights before i got him and it didnt really cover behavior and how often to feed him so they were the only thing i wasnt sure about but thanks anyway.

Does his belly look ok?

It sounds like your axolotl is acting like an axolotl. They're lazy creatures, and rarely move. Mine would probably never move if the water flowed just right, and food was put in one end and waste taken away from the other. They're also nocturnal, so they're less active during the day.

His belly looks fine. I'm not sure what you think is wrong with it.

Hi kaysie,

Yeah i thought mabye he was will because he had like red and black areas on his belly but you cant really see in the photos mabye it was the lighting conditions or something.

I suppose like kerry said i think im overreacting and im panicing a bit because im new to axolotls.

But thanks for advice
