Gill growth

Hello All

I have a brand new Axolotl named Max. While at the pet shop Max had his gills nibbled off by the other animals there. Currently Max is in a well aerated tank but he still pops up to the surface every 10 mins or so for a gulp of air.

Is there anything the I can do or add that will encourage his gills to grow back faster?

Good water parameters, temperature and nutrition will do the trick. Let nature take its course.

About how long should I expect to wait in order to see growth?

(or should I panic and assume that the conditions were so bad in the pet shop that he's trying to transform?)

It'll be awhile before you notice any real improvement, but just keep in mind that the odds of it morphing are slim to none and I wouldn't even worry about that possibility.

    Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

    Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
