Hi, all.

Our larvae are 5 weeks old now, but one of the goldens seems a bit unwilling to eat this morning. Normally they're all ravenous. He doesn't look stressed, but he's not moving about as much as usual either and he started to develop these white spots on his tail a few days ago. I just want to be sure the two aren't related really.

Hopefully the picture's clear enough - can someone with a bit more experience with infections tell if this is just his colour starting to come through or something more sinister? If needs be, I can fridge him as a precaution, but with him being so young, I'd rather not do anything hasty.

Thanks in advance!

Looks to me like it's normal colouring starting to develop. It can be quite strange to see when you first notice it but if you look closely you should be able to see that the colour is actually inside the tail and not on the outside where fungus would be. Hope it starts eating again soon.

Regards Neil

Thanks, Neil.

Good to know it's normal, he's eaten some daphnia now, so looks like all's okay :)

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
