Pretty sure Russ on here has bred at least one subspecies, but if I remember correctly it was difficult to have repeated success with them. I'm sure he'll chime in sooner or later.

They are somewhat problematic. They are easy to cycle but the females are notorious for eating their eggs. Egg retention is also a problem. I even went as far as not checking their cover for months trying not to disturb them, to no avail. I think better work on egg chambers may be the answer, that and containers that are not moved during feeding and maintenance (static set-up). I truly beleive it's a stress issue with the females.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
