What in the world? :(

Yesterday morning on of my bufos americanus, was the the fattest toad in the cage, later that same day at night, it was bone skinny, it is a female if i am correct, so i am wondering if it had babies.
Yes you are all probably thinking, just look around the cage and you will find out, but i am worried if i move the water dish then it might kills the babies (of there are any).
Please help me come to a conclusion.

Toads lay eggs. If there are any, they are probably in the water dish. Otherwise, your toad may be very ill- get her to the vet!
 
Yes toads lay eggs (so i have been told).
She is not sick she still eats normally, but i will talk to one of the vets on here.

Toads can retain a lot of fluid, which makes them look fat. I'm not sure why they do this, it maybe a defense mechanism to make themselves look bigger to a predator.
 
They can also puff up a bit when harassed. It makes them look bigger (scarier) and makes them harder to swallow (if you're the toad-swallowing type).

American toad eggs look like a double strand of black pearls. They're pretty obvious. And they lay their eggs in the spring.
 
Thank you Kaysie, I searched the cage and there are no eggs (unless the other toads ate them), so it must of been another reason (still really weird).

    Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

    Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
