T. cristatus got bit!

I have a mating couple of T.cristatus and sometime last night the female got bit on the tail. The bite is about 1/4" wide with a 1/2 circle bite missing. I have heard of putting melafix in the water for wounds but I don't know at what ratio to medicate for newts instead of fish? I also could wait and see how she does but I know that once there is infection it is really had to get rid of. But the water is clean and she's health, so..... any advice, other kinds of treatment, ect?

I had the same thing happen to my crested newt. The male took a bite out of my female's tale when I fed them chopped earthworms (back in March). I did not attempt any type of treatment. The missing chunk out of her tail grew back within a couple of months. Today you can't tell it happened.

During the years that I had crested newts, I saw a number of tail bites resulting in "missing chunks" of various sizes. One of them was a really nasty-looking chunk taken out of the TOP of the tail midway down. I never did any special treatment, and all of them grew back normally, just as Sue described.

I wouldn't treat it unless it starts to look infected. I don't think melafix is recommended for use with newts and salamanders.

    Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

    Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
