Axelina is ignoring me. She used to come and say hello most times when I came home and went to sit by her tank and chat to her. She would come and stare at me, and she seemed to be listenin. But since I took my pleco (fish) back to the petshop,Axelina has changed. This was about a week ago. Axelina doesn't come and greet me anymore, and is a bit scared if I put my hand near her in the tank. She was never scared of my hand before either, as I sometimes hand feed her. I don't know what's freaked her out, and how can I calm her down? She swims like a madman and pretends to be a rocket a lot, so I quess she may be getting scared of something???? Byaah, I want my cute little bully girl Axelina back to her normal self!

that's weird

it sounds like she's really stressed by something. perhaps she needs somewhere to hide?

I'm not aware if female axolotls moods change from time to time due to hormones or anything but is it a possibility?

It sounds like she is sad the fish are gone

It may be a sign that the is confused, but she will probably be fine in a day or so.

Thanks for your replies. I don't know either if axies have mood swings due to hormones, or whether she just misses her pleco friend.Maybe she thinks of me as the horrible woman who took her friend away...??? I am hoping to get a leucistic axie as a friend to her, when I manage to find one that is healthy and approx the same size as Axelina (7")

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
